Chronic Back Pain

Low back pain is the most common chronic pain there is, and one of the most misunderstood. For the large majority of people, there's no dangerous cause to find.

The muscles, joints and discs are in a rough patch, and the nerves that supply them have become oversensitive. That's why pain can be severe without anything being seriously wrong.

It also explains how we treat it. Our doctors work in steps, starting with what has the strongest evidence and the fewest downsides, and adding to it only if you need more.

Exercise has better evidence than anything else for chronic low back pain, which is why international guidelines put it ahead of medication.

The hard part is starting when moving is what hurts, so we set the type, the amount and the pace, and work with physiotherapy rather than simply telling you to stay active.

Comprehensive Assessment & Treatment Plan

Most people need more than one of these.

We combine what works for you and adjust the plan as things change.

Nerve Blocks

If movement alone isn't enough, we add medication chosen for the kind of pain you have. We also use compounded creams applied straight to the painful area, which put the medication where it's needed with less reaching the rest of your body.

When pain is coming from a specific structure and the first two steps haven't settled it, a nerve block can help.

A small injection of local anaesthetic placed close to the nerve carrying the pain does two things: it interrupts the signal, and it confirms whether that nerve is the source which tells us where to focus next.
